ECM reads CAN BUS FAILURE but engine runs fine

Hi:

I have a 2007 Silverton 36C with twin 385hp Crusader 8.1L MPI's with ECMs. My starboard engine ECM runs my engine fine but the Murphy Powerview Indicator is reading CAN BUS FAILURE. I checked out the indicator and it is fine. I swapped the port ECM with the starboard engine ECM and the starboard engine powerview indicator worked fine so the fault is with the ECM on the starboard engine.

Is there someone that repairs the ECMs for the Crusader engines? Who manufacturers the ECM for my engine? What portion of my ECM is not functioning properly and is it a software issue or hardware? The cost for a new ECM is over $800 so I am trying to lower my repair costs if at all possible.

I don't know squat about a Murphy Powerview Indicator but I believe a Cab Buss Failure is telling you it hasn't received any messages from the ECU within a certain amount of time. You may have done this when you swapped ECUs but if not remove all power to the ECU, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then plug it back in. You might get lucky.
 
Your ECM is made by GM's Delphi division. The ECM is used in many applications & is tuned (or flashed) for your application (off road, marine, etc) It is known as MEFI5. http://www.marinepowerusa.com/download-delphi-mefi.php has a trouble shooting manual you can download. Do you have a MIL (check engine light)? Is it on? I would suspect your engine is running in limp in mode. If you have a true ECM failure their should be a noticeable lack of performance. You need to find someone with a laptop scan tool & confirm your problem.

I'd suggest reassessing what is going on. If there is a can buss failure, the engine won't run fine. I'd suspect the interface between the Murph unit and the CAN buss was dirty and swapping parts resolved that. the Bus failure indicator was on the powerview.....

As far as rebuilt ECUs, search the www for auto computer exchange. I believe they are in FLA and will rebuilt/reprogram pretty much everything that has been used over ther years. There may be others as well.
