"Purchased used 1997 6HP recen

"Purchased used 1997 6HP recently. No info available about the condition of the engine at purchase. Changed the plugs (the original plugs were still in the engine) and it started immediately.

Water flowed from the little hose at the bottom of engine cover at first, then it sputtered, flowed fine, sputtered, and stopped flowing.

Installed water pump rebuild kit. The impeller housing was partly blocked at the outlet of the little metal cup. I cleaned it up, and restored it with a little epoxy mixed w/ microballoons.

Started the engine in tank. Water flowed immediately, then sputtered, quit. I let it run for a while hoping the flow would return, and it did briefly, then quit again. I cut engine off with a fine mist and possibly steam blowing out of the little rubber tube.

Was the impeller housing damaged?

The impeller housing appears like a little round house with a big smokestack on the side. The little round house contains the metal cup. There is an outlet on the side of the cup that lets water go up the smokestack.

Upon removal of the metal cup, the impeller housing had a clump of the black plastic material composing the housing that partially blocked the smokestack. It was very hard, and almost appeared as if it had melted and then hardened. This blockage was directly above the outlet of the metal cup and caused the bottom of the smokestack to be 1/3 to 1/2 blocked. The housing appeared to be otherwise intact. As the local outlet who supplied the rebuild kit did not have a housing in stock, I impatiently decided to use the original housing. I carved the material away with my pocket knife to return the housing to what would be its original shape, put the new metal cup in place, and then dabbed the epoxy above the outlet in the smokestack entrance to allow smooth flow out the outlet into the smokestack.

When the engine started, water immediately flowed out the little rubber outlet at the bottom of the engine cover."

"Have you pulled the lower unit back off to examine your "repair" to the housing? Sure sounds like maybe it worked for a little while, then failed.

I'd recommend getting a new housing and installing it before you use the motor again!"

There seems to be a lot of black greasy oil/water mixture in the tank water, and in the lower exhaust.

Also, this motor has a thermostat. I'm putting my money on this, but will not do anything else until I can re-do the water pump rebuild with the new impeller housing."

If you get a factory manual, it should have a colored diagram of the water flow ... but I'm pretty sure that the thermostat doesn't have anything to do with water flowing out the "telltale".

According to the dealer who sold me the impeller housing and second rebuild kit, the water intake was probably at some point blocked. This caused the impeller and housing to melt, causing the blockage I removed. The funny thing is that the impeller I removed was almost fully intact, it was dry and the blades were permanently curved.

The problem was that the pump would not suck. Whatever water was in the pump would go through the system, but when that ran out there was no suction to keep the flow going.
