"My evinrude 50 Runs fantastic

"My evinrude 50 Runs fantastic however the 8 pin tachometer and charging circut isn't operating. I read 12.56 volts @ bat terminalsany rpm. can disconnect the bat and engine continues to run fine. Please help me to DX the problem, I recently purchased the engine due to very low hrs and it had been sitting for a few years.
Thank you"

welcome to marineengine!!

sounds like your voltage regulator is fried.....check ALL your wire connections and make sure they are super clean

do you have a manula?.......you need to run some tests to verify it is bad they are a lil pricey.

"i dont have a manual for your

"i dont have a manual for your eng....but i looked at the parts diagram and it looks to have a 3 wire rectifier. i have a test you can do with a multimeter. at least i think it whoud work for yours..mine has, well had, the lil round one and i saved the test.

Small Rectifier Test, by Joe Reeves
Perhaps your engine does not have the water cooled regulator/rectifer but rather incorporates the smaller 3 wire rectifier which sits just forward of a vertical electrical strip on the starboard side of the engine.

If so, a failed rectifier would knock out the tachometer. See the following.

Remove the rectifier wires from the terminal block. Using a ohm meter, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the rectifier base (ground), then one by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, then the red wire (some rectifiers may also have a fourth yellow/blue wire. If so connect to that also). Now, reverse the ohm meter leads and check those same wires again. You should get a reading in one direction, and none at all in the other direction.

Now, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the red wire. One by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, and if present, the yellow/blue wire. Then reverse the leads, checking the wires again. Once more, you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

Note that the reading obtained from the red rectifier wire will be lower then what is obtained from the other wires.

Any deviation from the "Reading", "No Reading" as above indicates a faulty rectifier. Note that a rectifier will not tolerate reverse polarity. Simply touching the battery with the cables in the reverse order or hooking up a battery charger backwards will blow the diodes in the rectifier assy immediately."

Running the motor with the bat

Running the motor with the battery disconnected is an excellent way to blow your rectifier.

Thanks David I will check this

Thanks David I will check this out. The problem existed before I momently removed the neg bat connection only to see if engine would continue to run then quickly placed it back

"Hi David. I have the 0585001

"Hi David. I have the 0585001 RECT/REG AY,4/12A larger unit. am I able to run the same test as described above."

im not sure......i thought one

im not sure......i thought one that new would have a 4 wire water cooled reg/rec.

if you follow all the directions i can tell you it wont hurt it .......its a test that does not put any voltage through the wires ----ohms.

i thought someone would have corrected me if it didnt apply to your eng......but like i said im not sure.

"This engine should have a 4-w

"This engine should have a 4-wire 'clipper' regulator and rectifier. Not water cooled, but air cooling ribs.
Pulling off ground or B+ with engine running will kill it, opposite the 'old' rectifiers (no regulators), 1 second or 10 days -does not matter!"

Thank You Morten. with all the

Thank You Morten. with all the overheat problems I have read about is ok to replace with Sierra Marine SIE18-5827 Replaces OEM #0585001 rectifier. I dont see cooling ribs in the photo. Also I will not use wing nuts on the Bat.

"With the price difference ind

"With the price difference indicated I understand Your question, but I leave it to You!
If You are in need of relative high power output, I would go foe a 'cooled' regulator, but if just running and no heavy charging except for keeping the starter battery up, I guess anything might do.
You may use wing nuts, as long as You keep them tight when running!"
