E30RCED lower unit problems

Hello everyone.
I did a reseal on my 1989 30hp Evinrude.
I finally took it to the lake last night.
Evinrude ran great in forward, but made a grinding noise in reverse.
I took the lower unit back off- removed the prop and the bearing carrier.
I don't think the prop shaft is hitting the carrier when pulled back(as when the prop is pulling back in reverse) The prop shaft wiggles about a quarter inch with or without the carrier installed.
I checked the parts diagram, and everything is there. Rear thrust washer is in place.
It seems like the reverse gear is hitting the shift bracket that goes around the reverse gear before the thrust washer is hitting the carrier.
The carrier seems to be in all the way(about 3/8 inch past the housing)
I have not figured out what the carrier is supposed to seat on yet? I guess the big snap ring? but the carrier has a relief cut into it where the ring would hit, and only the ears of the snap ring would hit?
Any ideas on what could be wrong? and what does the carrier actually seat on when bolted down?

The bearing housing should seat against the snap-ring, you do have the retainer plate under the snap-ring don't you?
