E15rcrm Evinrude 15 hp - Fuel problem

This motor runs good for a few seconds then shuts off like it isn't getting fuel. Sometimes it will run for 5 or 10 minutes. Here is what I have replaced new on it. All fuel lines on motor including the hose and primer bulb from tank to motor , New fuel connector from primer hose to motor New fuel pump , New Carb rebuild kit , and new fuel tank. The only thing I have not replaced is the body fuel connector. This motor sit for years and the carb was a mess. I soaked it in parts cleaner overnight , ran wire through all the small holes , blew it out with air , and cleaned carb body with a steel brush before installing the new carb kit. I am in over $ 500 just on parts. Im about to count my losses and give up on it. I could go ahead and replace the body fuel connector. Could this be the problem ? Does anyone have any advise before I throw in the towel ?

When it goes to shut off have you tried squeezing the primer bulb to see if it revives it? If it does, then you have a fuel delivery problem, if it doesn't, you have another problem.

If squeezing the primer bulb does not revive it and therefore the problem lies elsewhere I would then do the following. Since you cleaned the carb I will ask if you set the slow speed adjust properly and if you synchronized the carb to the timing plate? Those two operations go with all carb overhauls.

After that I would want to know the compression of each cylinder and if the sparks on each cylinder can jump a 3/8" gap on an external spark tester.

Thanks ill check all that out. I can tell you I did a compression check and got 90 on one cylinder and closer to 100 on the other. I really have no ideal about the timing but I will see what I can find out. Thanks agai

The carb/timing plate sync is simply aligning the throttle cam to the carb's roller. As you turn the throttle grip you will notice that a piece under the flywheel (throttle cam) hits the carb's roller that controls the gas to the motor. The sync is to ensure that a mark that is on that cam is in the center of the carbs roller "just" as it touches the cam. This ensures that the timing advance is positioned properly for all RPM ranges, including idle.

As for the slow speed adjustment, here is the procedure if case you don't have it.

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/4 turns.

Start engine, let it warm up for a few minutes and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Now obviously you will need the motor to run longer then 10 seconds to set this, but at least put the carb to the start up level first. If it is too lean right now it will not run long, if at all.
