E140TLCEB removing lower unit

I'm in the process of changing out the water pump and I'm stuck on the shift linkage. Basically, does the long shift linkage rod come down with the lower unit, or is there some kind of inner/outer sleeve that goes into the long shaft from just below the carbs?

On the starboard side is a cotter pin that connects the shift linkage to a fork. I believe that fork connects to a shaft smack in the middle under the carbs. I can see a nut there. So you're telling me just remove the cotter pin and pull the pin out. I don't have a hitch pin anywhere that I can see. Then again, the cotter pin may have had a hitch pin there originally. I had to remove two cables to be able to see better.

No it is the hitch pin that you remove !-----Nothing to do with a cotter pin for this job.----Only tool required might be a screwdriver to remove the hitch pin.----Then push that shaft to the port side

Go ahead and tell me if I'm wrong, but don't you remove item #33 shift rod pivot screw?

@FDRGATOR - Now that's what mine looks like! Who woulda thunk that it would be in the cylinder and crankcase section. Thank you.

Bracket #20 is where I see the screw pass from #67 shift rod to #47? shift rod on the lower unit page.

So... starting over, I disconnected the shift rod from the link shift lever (that'll be fun getting back together) whereas I need to remove screw #33 or #51. I still don't see from the pictures how the vertical shift rod attaches to the horizontal one.

Still dark here, but I have a better idea now.

@FDRGATOR - That was it! Somehow I was able to loosen the bolt and pull it back enough that it released the shift rod but it still hasn't fallen out (fingers crossed). Thanks again for the pointer.

I can't say on that exact model, but, generally speaking, I use a wobble socket and a long extension to remove/reinstall the bolt
