"Hi guys, On another forum that I visit here in the UK, A guy posted "how to read the stator voltage", I replied that you need a dva meter to get a usable reading from all of the electrics in a outboard and a standard MM is only good to read the Ohms and continuity, and someone else replied that is not true, you can get a usable reading from a multimeter.

Who's correct, I have never had a usable reading from a MM on a outboard, and I stated that a stator voltage varies so quickly that a standard MM cannot read the voltage and you need a dva meter to read the peak voltage.

Yeah I know, I should not get involved with idiot poster's, but this guy p*ss*d me off.

cheers

"James, I'm no expert outb

"James, I'm no expert outboard mechanic by any means, but am an electrical engineer and know that a standard multimeter (volt-ohm-meter) can damage sensitive solid state circuits because their probes present low impedance (resistance) values to solid state circuit components being measured and can either put a damaging load on them, or can present a voltage to the circuit being checked that may damage some of the components. DVM (digital volt meters), use high impedance circuits themselves, and present high resistances to the component being measured - so they are much safer to use when measuring solid state circuits. And, they operate much faster, too, and that would come into play for you with your stator, I think. Just an opinion. As I said, I'm certainly no expert boat mechanic and would seek advice from someone else on this board who is! Hope this maybe helped a little.

"I know what Mike is saying bu

"I know what Mike is saying but there isn't anything that sensitive in an outboard's electronics, at least not in the older ones. You do need a DVA to get useful readings. Here is a schematic for one if you want to make your own.

"Hi guys, cheers for your repl

"Hi guys, cheers for your replies, as usual, loads of good info.

Think I am going to make a dva adapter as above, just for the hell of it
