dva adaptor

i am trying to build a dva adapter so i can read peak voltage with my multimeter . i have read on another forum how to build one for maybe 4 -5 bucks. the only problem i'm having is locating the correct capacitor. they call for a 2.2 uf @ 400 volts which i am not able to locate. my question is , will a higher UF rating affect the reading i get through the adapter ?

It will affect the reading, but more than that, it will affect the time that it takes to reach the peak reading, which is what you are after. The larger the capacitor, the longer it takes to charge it to capacity. Are you sure about the 2.2? I made mine with a 0.22 and it works fine. I can't claim any great authority on my choice though. 400V is about minimum you should use. 600V would give a better safety margin.

fdrgator, not POSITIVE about the 2.2 but pretty sure thats what they said . could be a typo .don't know. you are saying to use one in the .5 range ?@ 600 volts? thanks for your time . ---david---
