Have a 1990 200hp with Duo Pro

Have a 1990 200hp with Duo Prop deisel. When going along can trim out but will then loose pressure and trim in by itself. Checked and have water in oil suggesting leak in seals in rams. Someone tells me to remove rams and replace seals I must take the engine out to gain access to them (not like mercruiser where rams are external). Please tell me this is not the case to fix problem. Thanks

"You must take the boat out of the water, but do not need to take the engine out. Lift a Z-leg and secure it with rope or something, than unscrew special bolt on the end of the trim cylinder and disassemble the cylinder.Seals you can buy at auto seals shops etc..You will need a special key (which volvo doesnt sale - they wanna sell you new cylinders)to do that.Let someone make you this key."

This is a very common problem.

This is a very common problem.I have six boats with these drives and have found that if you can flush out the system by removing the plugs at the rams...and pumping oil through the system...trimming up and down over and over again... keep adding oil to the tank eventually you will have clean fluid through the whole system and the rams will hold pressure again. you may have to remove the tank and clean it by hand if it has gotten too bad.Removing the rams is hit or miss. You use a grease gun and zirc fitting in the hole in transom shield to push the pins out but usually they don't come out too easily. Like Blaz said you can replace the seals with the proper tools. Replacing the oil will usually work for a few months...in our case 500 hours.Very easy fix
