Dumb question about muffs

"Ok, this was a dumb thing to do but after I/we got the outboard to run 1/2 decent we decided to take it to the lake. We get it in the water and it ran (barely) terrible, we managed to get about 500 yards from the dock, we fished for a while and being obsessed with the boat running so bad we decided to load it back up and come home. When we raised the motor we realized we had left the muff on there... would this have caused it to run (or not as the case was) so badly????)"

"Tony, you had the water intak

"Tony, you had the water intakes blocked significantly. A minimal amount of water would have got sucked through the hose connection, but certainly not enough to keep the motor cooled properly at anything above a slow idle speed.

Hopefully you didn't overheat the motor and cause internal damage..."

It was lucky to even idle and

It was lucky to even idle and was missing like crazy.. It WAS peeing but kept stalling out. It ran pretty well here but seems like when we got it into the water it had problems.

"Tony, where to start. History

"Tony, where to start. History on the motor...
New to you? how old are the plugs? new gas? has this been stored for a while?

What's the compression like? ignition ok? have spark at all cylinders?

What size of engine we looking at? single cylinder 4 horse or V6 250??

Missing like crazy could be anything from misadjusted carb(s) to bad trigger - time to troubleshoot, but start with the basics....

If the motor runs well on muffs but like crud in the water, the carbs are usually the issue..."
