DT65 Hard Starting No Idle

"My 1980 DT65 has developed a problem. It is running very rich at idle, and it's hard to start. I put a new set of plugs in it today and I still could not get it to idle for more than 30-40 seconds. I pulled the brand new plugs out and they are black and wet.

I installed new carb kits yesterday, thinking the problem was bad needle and seats, it ran good for about 30 minutes. I shut it off and went to restart it and it would not start, it just flooded.

I tried to start it today and it sill would not idle, lots of smoke, coughing and sputtering but no idle. It will sometimes surge between 600 and 1000 rpm a few times and then cough and die.I can also see a small puddle of raw fuel at the very front of the carburetors.

The weirdest thing is when its starts that surging I can partially choke it and the idle smooths out for a few seconds then it sputters again and dies.

I have no piolt adjustment on the lower carb, I can turn the screw way out or seat it and nothing happens to the idle speed. The top carb is real touchy, a 1/4 turn any direction will instantly kill what little idle I manage to get."

"If you squeeze the primer bulb, will it hold pressure? No fuel leaking into intake past the needle and seats?"

"Yes, the primer bulb will get

"Yes, the primer bulb will get rock hard if I pump it. The needle and seats are brand new, I'm sure they are not leaking.

The primer bulb will soften slightly after a number of starting attempts. It only takes about 1/2 a pump to get it back to rock hard.

Will a very small leak in the fuel pump cause this problem?? I took the pump apart and cannot see a rip or tear. Is there any way to check if the diaphragm is porous?"

"I know on my Yami that the pump doesn't have to show a visable tear to be faulty. It can become porous as you say. If you remove the fuel pump from its mount and squeeze the primer bulb gently, fuel should not leak past the diaphram. If it does replace it."

"I never tried that trick, I'm replacing every part of the fuel system, pump diaphragm, fuel filter, going through the carbs again, dumping the fuel and flushing the tank, flushing the bulb and fuel line.

The tank and bulb are only a couple days old. Against my better judgement I did a knot-head thing, and used the gas from my old tank. The fuel shows lots of little orange jelly particles. I've got them completely flushed from my tank and fuel system. I'll run it this week end and see what happens.

BTW, what could have created the orange junk in my old fuel tank???"

"Well, it runs, kind of. I have to keep the idle speed around 1200rpm. It runs strong at WOT but burns gas like it's free. I made a 3 mile round trip and burned 2 gal of gas????"
