Dropping lu on b68 35hp

trying to drop lu on 35h. remo

trying to drop lu on 35h. removed arms on shift rod coupler. removed bolts. does the shift rod drop out or stay in power head? top of rod appears to be spot welded to coupler. l unit has dropped about 3/4 inch and stopped. i don't want to damage by forcing. any help greatly appreciated. thanks
 
The shift rod was splined to t

The shift rod was splined to the shifter and could rust to the rod pretty easy. The only thing held the rod on the lower was a flimsy "e" clip so any real pressure could have you deep in the guts trying to get the shift "Acorn" back on the shift shaft.

It's almost easier to put the powerhead on the bench and deal with the stuck shift rod than try and force it off the rusted splines. Besides you may need to extract that whole shift rod any way if it pulls from the lower unit.And you can only do that with the power head off the mount. You would need to heat the splines and tap on a vice-grips to get them apart.
