When I drop the lower unit on this motor will I need to disconnect the shift shaft linkage, or will the unit just drop when the L/U retaining nuts are off?
From the online diagrams I'm looking at it almost seems like the shift shaft is a two part deal connecting with a cam between the bottom cowl and the shaft housing.
This form has been an excellent resource!
I do have a manual in route, but in the hands of a novice it may just encourage more postings...

"it will separate on its own.

"it will separate on its own. remove it in neutral even if the manual says different, it will be easier to put back together. 2 5/8 nuts up front, remove the trim tab 1/2, 2 9/16 nuts under trim tab."

"Thanks for the reply JB,

Your right everything I've read says to put it in forward...I will follow your lead and leave it in neutral.
Do I need to give special consideration to the shift lever?

"leaving both in neutral makes

"leaving both in neutral makes it easier to install, since the lower is off you can put a pair of vise grips on the shift shaft and shift it into any gear you want. But before you put it back on you must verify nuetral, prop spins easy both ways, drive shaft doesn't move. The shift shaft likes to jump into fwd on its own, turn it ccw for neutral then rev. it only moves about 40 degrees to shift gears but will continue to rotate around if not careful. There should be a seal at the top of the drive shaft, it likes to get knocked off and fall into the mid section, look for it."

Thanks again JB
