"Hey all, I have been trying for ages to find out the year of my 80hp blueband Mercury outboard. I was told to look for the serial number on the right hand side rear of the transom mount. When I did, the only number there was:

1440
3255

and it was written like that (four digits on top and four below) as it's an 8 digit number and it seems all Merc serial numbers are 7 digits, I can't find it anywhere in the charts. If anyone could tell me where I might find a 7 digit serial number I would very much appreciate it. I desperately need to get parts for it but can't do so until I can I.D. it. Thanks."
 
"It is on the swivel bracket.

"It is on the swivel bracket. Look under the cowling at the front, clean the grease off and there it is, along with the other letters and instructions. May help to turn the motor to one side or the other. Post a picture?"
 
I cant see any other numbers t

I cant see any other numbers there. Are they supposed to be on a plate or stamped/molded into the bracket? I have had a thorough look at the engine though and found a couple of 7 digit numbers. The first was stamped into what appears to be a welch plug near the fuel filter the number is 8072558. The other is slightly above that and appears to have been cast with the motor as the digits are raised instead of stamped in later. It is 8717748. I don't know if these numbers are at all helpful as they may just be part numbers.

"thanks guys. I'm starting to think that I should have mentioned earlier that I'm in Australia. I have noticed that nearly all the engine ID charts are American based. The numbers on the engines sold in Australia differ to the USA. however, that said, I still can not quite lock in the exact year/model as there is very little reference material on the net for Aussie numbered engines. I'm pretty sure though that it's in the 80-83 bracket. Ultimately I need a stator for it but don't want to get the wrong one. The serial number is definately 8072558 any further help is appreciated. Caleb"
