Driveshaft ORing

"1976 Johnson 35EL76G drawing

"1976 Johnson 35EL76G drawing shows an o-ring (#44 on the parts drawing) that apparently goes somewhere above the impeller housing. I haven't found anything that looks like an o-ring groove on the driveshaft, and the manual doesn't mention installing an o-ring on the shaft when re-assembling the lower unit. Can anyone enlighten me on where it goes on the shaft?

The o-ring on top of the shaft

The o-ring on top of the shaft that keeps the grease on the splines and prevents water from going in. (Up at the crankshaft end).
