Driveshaft changing

I have a lower unit from a 82

I have a lower unit from a 82 50hp that is all beat up and cracked.
I also have a like new looking unit from a 89 70hp.
My motor is an 82 60hp.
The beat up one fits but the one off the 70 has a bigger spline and more of a crook in the shifter rod.
I see the shifter rods and water pumps will interchange but what will I have to go through to change the driveshaft over?
The housings as far as I can tell are identical.
I removed the bearing housing under the water pump but the shaft doesnt want to come out.
Do I have to pull the prop shafts and gears out to get that driveshaft out?
Wish I had a manual!
I just found this forum!
Thanks in advance!

There's a nut on the bottom of those driveshafts BUT don't bother as they will not interchange anyway.

Thanks Joe for the fast response!
Will all of the guts change over or are the housings different inside?
At this point its tempting to have a welder swap top shaft ends!

"Not sure of the answer to you

"Not sure of the answer to your question, sorry. But I'd suspect that there are major differences."

"You will need more than a drive shaft welder to get that to match. Gear ratio is different, internal components are different, prop is different.....
Perhaps if You get all the internal parts from a 45/55 commercial You might be able o use the housing."

I was checking some of that stuff.
The gear ratios seem the same about 2 1/2 to 1
The prop is the same size and spline etc
Every thing looks identical except the bigger spline on top of the driveshaft and of course bigger hole in the pump casing.
The pump case is bigger on the 70 but the bolt pattern is the same

In that case You may have the commercial gearcase installed. The prop on the 2 cyl 60/82 should be about 11 3/4 in dia versus 13 3/4 on the 70/3 cyl.
You will still need to take it all apart and remove the pinion nut to get out the drive shaft.

My prop is a 12 1/2 x 13
So it could be the two housings are the same inside?
My 82 60 is over at a buddies garage but it is a normal long shank electric start.
The bottom end 70 comes from model vj70tleie
It had power tilt and trim which I wish I could have used but would like to at least use the bottom if possible
Hmm I see that 70hp bottom is a 91 sorry about that!

Perhaps time to polish Your glasses and double check if the props really are 'interchangeable'?
That even includes checking that the prop hub diameters are the same as well as the diameter of the lower gearcases.

"I just walked out and tried the prop on both.
It fits good on both and has about a finger clearance to the fin above it.
In both cases the prop is just slightly smaller in diameter than the hole in the casing.
Am I missing something here?
Glasses! I am ready to go look for a magnifying glass now!
