"I originally posted the following on the Chriscraft forum. Hoping for better lucjk here.........}.....last fall the starboard drive train (220 hp crusaders) starting making a loud grinding/rattling sound when shifted into gear. no noise in neutral. It would actually stall the motor if you attempted to drive the boat. My mechanic imediately said problems with gears in the v drive. I yanked the engine and he took apart the vdrive...no problems. He then looked into the transmission, again with no apparent issues. We dropped the oil pan in the engine....nothing amiss. Now we are removing the heads but are running out of ideas. A friend suggested looking at the back cam lobes as a possible problem? Anyone got any other ideas?

thx in advance.

"If there is grinding, then there are loose pieces of metal. The oil sumps of the engine, xmisison, vdrive is the first thing to check. If the engine is quiet thru all rpms in neutral, that's the last place i'd look. Pros can bench test the transmission and get oil pressure readings."

"You can separate the shaft flanges to isolate the 'back half' of the drive train vs the 'front half', if you haven't done so already. due to all the solid metal used, noises can be transferred thruout the drive train really easy."
