The Drive shaft on my 1960 Johnson outboard motor is sitting too high and I cant place the powerhead back on. Does anyone know what would cause this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

The battery on my crystal ball is dead.---Do tell what motor you are working on.-----And what work did you do?----What parts were replaced ?

1960 Johnson outboard CD-17, I took the powerhead off and dropped the lower unit to replace an Impeller thats all I did, I am now trying to put the motor back together.

The driveshaft is fully seated into the shock absorber / slipclutch?---The mechanical seal at the top of the driveshaft assembled correctly?----And you are turning the flywheel to engage the splines.-----Pin on the tower shaft engaged properly.

It did NOT fall out of the pinion gear.----Not possible.------No preload pin on these either.-----Is the mechanical seal assembled in the correct order ?

This should be simple to figure out !
the driveshaft moves slightly up and down, the bolts on my gearbox are stuck so I haven't been able to check if the preload pin is in there but I assume it is. By mechanical seal do you mean the spring and washers on the top of the drive shaft if so yes I have it assembled correctly.

If you answer the questions already posted you will get results.-----Fact for you --I own about 20 of these 5.5 / 6 HP motors.---And how far does the driveshaft stick up out of the exhaust housing?----An exact measurement is needed.----Do not reply with " about 3/4 " or so!

I'll check the exact height, for my knowledge what is the preload pin?
