Drive shaft removal

I am trying to remove the driveshaft on a 1982 johnson 115 to inspect the clutch dog and shifter assembly. My tech manual calls out a tool #311875 to hold the driveshaft in place in order to remove the pinion nut. I am wondering where I could find a tool like this, it looks like its just a socket that fits over the splines at the top of the shaft. Is there another way to do this without the tool?
Thanks
Eric

I was able to remove the pinion nut but the driveshaft is still stuck in the lower end. I thought the pinion nut was the last step and then it would just pull out. is there something I am missing here?

Put the nut back on with just a few threads. Then shift it so the clutch dog is just below the nut. Next wedge a big screw driver between the dog and the nut and give prop shaft a good rap upward. This should break the pinion gear loose. Done it many times.

The only time I ever used that puller was when I had to take a two piece d/s out of a g/c that was junk so I could keep the upper d/s for the new g/c.

Thanks for the replies. I tried to just pull on it, but had no success. I will try to your advice Boobie. I talked to the shops here and they said they didnt have the puller so hopefully the wedge works..

Thanks again for the advice Boobie. The screwdriver wedge trick worked great. I have removed the driveshaft now and all that is left is the propshaft with the forward gear. I've read through the book multiple times and it seems like this should just slide out now, but it only slides about 1 or 2 inches. Am I missing something here?

Shift rod back in and push it down into the reverse position.---Then remove shift shaft again.--Should all slide out now.
