"74 Mercury 650 65hp lower unit. I have the lower unit completely taken apart. It was alot easier than I thought. All I have left is the drive shaft. My book really doesn't show very well how to remove it. There is a big bolt on the bottom end of the drive shaft that holds the drive gear on. Does this have to be removed to take the drive shaft out? It won't budge, are there any tricks to getting it out?

Thanks.................Greg"

I don't see any evidence on any of my lower units that suggests a gasket was ever there but it makes sense that it would be a good place to put one.

Thanks.......................Greg"

You don't need a gasket there water gets all in there anyway. and the nut on the bottom of the drive shaft has to come off to get the shaft out.
