Drive Shaft Housing

Hi, I was returning from fishing the other day, and hit a shoal, Ive got a 9.8 Nissan s# 15331, I took the lower unit off and went thru it, appears tobe fine, everything spins true, then I looked at the Drive shaft housing, and it looks like it has alittle bend/crease in it, sure looks like a tough one to repair, Is it worth it. love the motor, she starts so easy, I hate to trash it, after I hit the shoal I only had a few 100 yards back to the ramp, but darn it would only go around 3MPH and if I gave it alittle more gas it was shaking big time, How tough is it to replace the Drive shaft housing?

You did not mention actual model or serial. I'm guessing you have an NS9.8B 2-stroke. The DS housing is available,

3B2S610201, DRIVESHAFT HOUSING S, $149.68
3B2S611921, DRIVE SHAFT HOUSING L, $173.44
3B2610122M, GASKET, DRIVESHAFT HOUSING, $9.38

but I would check to see if the prop is OK. You may just have a spun prop. If so, no big deal.

OTOH, if you have a bent driveshaft, you will need:

3B2643061M, DRIVESHAFT, $129.20
3B2643071M, DRIVE SHAFT L, $85.05

Thanks Paul, I did list the serial # 15331, and the model # is ns9.8B. I think its a 2001,
did check the prop, looks fine, how hard is the housing to replace?? thanks much

Year is unimportant for servicing a Nissan outboard. Sorry, I missed the serial... which is indeed for a 9.8B. S is for Short, L is for Long. In order to change the ds housing, you will need to pull the power head. Grab a Factory service manual (available from any dealer, including me), and review it. You will be in for a few hours of turning wrenches. Is the drive shaft true, with no twisting? If the prop struck the bottom, the hub is likely spun. That could be your speed and vibration issue. Do you have a picture or 2?

just took some for you, can you see the bend on the housing? motorshafthousing.jpg

Wow. And the rubber mounts didn't shear? Amazing. Yes, it does look like the casting is bent along the back... also amazing it didn't tear on the forward edge. Running at speed with the drive shaft that far out of true would tend to make it whip, which sure could cause a nasty vibration.

I know I thought that too, those rubber mounts should have broke free, can you give me the P/N for the Drive shaft housing/gaskit and book I will need? Thanks much,

Yes, I can help you. It looks like you have a short shaft model (about 17" from the top of the transom to the anti-ventilation plate), right? If so, you will want the 003-21035-1 service manual, $45.00, as well as 3B2S610201, DRIVESHAFT HOUSING S, $149.68, and 3B2610122M, GASKET, DRIVESHAFT HOUSING, $9.38. You can drop me an email at the office, [email protected], or call 716-877-8221 MWF 9-5 (winter hours), and I can supply the parts you need. I would verify that the driveshaft is true and not twisted, and get everything apart, in case you need rubber mounts or any other sundries. While you have the LU down, if it's been a few years since the water pump was serviced, now would be a prudent time to install a new wp kit. Likewise, if there is any evidence of water intrusion in the lower unit, this is the time to install a seal kit.

Thanks Paul, yes its the Short shaft model, I'll work on getting it apart and get ahold of you next week.

Thanks very much
Steve

Paul, I got it off, all is well, I'll call ya in the morning to order the housing/gasket.

Steve
