"I have a 1995 Regal 176SE Valanti with a Mercruiser motor. When I bought the boat this year I noticed the drive oil reservoir was empty after the first use. I had the outdrive checked for any leaks in the seals and they determined that was not it. They saw some oil underneath the engine and determined it is "probably" a leak in the tube that transfers drive oil from the reservior to the out drive.
2 things bother me here. First, they said probably. They also said the only way to check is to take the entire engine out and see if they can find a leak. Now this issue alrady burned up my outdrive once and I paid $1700 to fix it. I don't want to have it happen again, but I hate that it's going to cost $800 just to pull the eninge and possibly just replace a $2 hose. Is there any other way to figure this out? Could it be something else? The access underneath the engine is small which is why they say they need to pull the motor, but I would love to find another solution. Thanks for any help!"
