drive oil in bilge...

Hi

i have a mercruiser 4.3l, the drive oil resevior oil level keeps dropping and the bilge is collecting oil, also the stern drive oil level keeps dropping, i assume that this is conected, i have replaced the gimble bearing reciently so is it likly that a seal is not in corectly fitted, would this force oil back into the bilge??
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

If the oil resevoir is not leaking or the tubing from the resevoir to the transom is not leaking then it is most likely the upper carrier seal in the outdrive. The seal behind the gimbal bearing does not seal out gear lube.

Hi Chris

its an Alpha 1 generation 2.

Hi Kghost

thanks for you input, is the upper carrier seal also known as "gear end yoke seal" i found info on that in another search.

cheers

If you pull your drive leg and find lots of oil in the driveshaft bellows area, the upper seal is your problem.
I would do that first and see what you find.
