"hello all, removed upper gear

"hello all, removed upper gear housing on 83 AQ125A w/ 270 to take care of u-joints today and liked what I saw...kind of...nice and clean, no rust or evidence of water or scale etc etc but there was about 3/4 of a cup of oil in there although it was clean oil,no chunks or gunk is that a sign of impending doom? also looking for the link to u-joint servicing. Thanks"

"Sounds like the upper gear seal (21) is starting to leak somewhat. No immediate concern, IMO.

The u-joints should have zerk fittings, pump some grease through them until you see it coming through the seals.

When reassembling, do not forget to grease the yoke and shaft splines.

"Got the joints...and yes they were Dodge but not from Napa.Next problem,why is it that the yolk and upper gear housing slid off like butter but the reinstall(aside from having to use the force like Luke Skywalker cause you can't see anything to put the yolk on the shaft)was extremely difficult. The first 1/4" of insertion wasn't so bad but trying to get the rest of the way took alot of pushin and pushin(and swearing)and the last 1/4" to get the housing to finally drop down into the vertical drive coupling was the worst part. With all that is it possible the CV joint is now in a bind, or if it's in far enough to drop down is it physically impossible to be bound up?"

"Mark, it is possible that you put too much grease and grease and/or air got trapped inside the yoke, making the assembly difficult or impossible. When you grease the yoke and the spline, a light coat is all what is required. This is one of the cases where more is not better."

"Hmmmm...yes I might have put a little too much grease on both which I guess thats why it took so many attempts cause I did end up wiping grease off each failed attempt(feeling for something potentially wrong,when it was me all along). At any rate...if its in there far enough to allow the upper to sit in place is there a chance of being in a bind in there or will a couple of revolutions of the engine allow everything to find its place?"

"I think your best bet is to remove the yoke, clean the excess of grease, and reinstall it again. Remember that Physics tells us that solids and liquids are not compressible."
 
Gotcha...also would a thin coa

Gotcha...also would a thin coat of non-hardening Permatex between the upper and lower gear housing mating surfaces be completely out of line? when cleaning the mating surfaces I removed what appeared to be some sort of adhesive on those surfaces I just don't recall there being any reference to in the Seloc manual.
