drip from raw water pump? 1991 570

91 VP 570. aftermarket 3 year old sherwood rw pump has a drip coming from it and I can't tell if its from the face plate or the shaft area. I resealed and set the o-ring, worked non drip for a few hours but the drip is back. I replace my impeller every seaon. Did some previous post searching and found out this is a common problem and it's probably a seal within the pump it self. If I have a sherwood pump what should I do next? Can i replace the gasket on the inside of the rw pump with out removing it entirely? I have limited space to work with since my fuel tank is directly in front of my rw sea pump. I usually use a mirror to look inside the rw impeller housing.

Is this your pump?

If yes, you will have to replace the lip seal (part number 7) and also both bearings (part 2) as they have been exposed to water even if they are supposedly sealed. You should also check that the shaft is not damaged (i.e. no grooves or scratches) around the area where the lip seal makes contact.

yes el-p that sure looks like mine..will be getting the model# off the pump later today..can i still run the boat with the drip? or how long before the pump fails?

Re: drip from raw water pump?

I'm no fortune teller, so your guess is as good as mine.:D In any case, those leaks don't get any better. My biggest concern would not be the leak but rather the bearings seizing.

Re: drip from raw water pump?

I'm going to take off the rw pump..does any body know of something to plug the hose coming from the OD into the RW pump. I don't feel safe with just jamming a rag in there. Anybody know the inside dia. of that hose or have used a odd item laying around the garage or house that will fit in there and allow you to safely tighten down the hose clamp?

Re: drip from raw water pump?

Appears that a new leak is coming from my sherwood p105 rw pump..it looks like it is coming from the metal casting tube that the main water intake hose slides over..as if there's a hair line crack in the metal but I can not see it? I inspected the hose and it is not comprimised. I even doubled up on hose clamps..still a drip wit engine not even running. Is this possible? Ever happen to anyone else? Cheap china metal?

Re: drip from raw water pump?

If you were to renew the bearings and seal, it may solve your problem.

I've had much better luck with the Johnson crankshaft pumps.
Either fits exactly the same! (bolts may be different)
The shaft is not keyed as is the Sherwood. Makes impeller installation simple!
There are two sizes of this pump.
The smaller Johnson pump impeller can be found to fit many more applications..... including the smaller Jabsco.
(different story with the Jabsco or Johnson large volume pumps)

Food for thought!

Where is a good deal place to get a Johnson pump? Do u know what model# I would need?
I did replace the seal but this drip is definitely coming from rate under the hose clamp area. No leak from middle of pump like before where seal is.
