dreadful noise

Started the season off today with the most horrible grinding noise coming from what would appear to be the outdrive, lot of burning smell and smoke before returning to the slip. sounded like i had no oil or some sort of ceased bearing. managed to limp back to port but i cant find how to dip the lower end for oil. ive a searay215 with mercruiser 5.0 thunderbolt and a singlr prop outdrive. any advice would be most greatful

He asked about the dipstick. Look in the engine bay behind the motor under the motor see alot of rubber pieces. Yes then it's the coupler motor got to come off. Drive comes off first then the motor got to be pulled.

Then you can check the bearing.

If you do the outdrive oil change, use a clean container, and see if you can let it drip thru a screen see your looking for metal pieces. The lower plug will have a magnet, if you have chunks on the screen and the magnet you have problems.

Actually you already have problems. Between gears going and the coupler going your better off with the coupler going.

Did the motor overheat when this happened ?

What year boat ?

Like pulling teeth to get info sometimes with people.

Want to help you and see if we can get you back on the water the cheapest way possible.

hi all, many thanks for your many and varied replies, my searay is 1999 with 307 hours, their was no real signs of any overheating issues but then again i didnt get to go all that far, as i left port i noticed a rarther strong smell of what i thought was the dirt and dust from lying up over the winter and then the groaning and chattering started, first i thought it might be my waterpump stuck and the belts were slipping on the pulley, it had that kinda noise and smell but as i open the engine hatch i noticed some smoke from the back of the engine towards the out drive. so i decided to return to port and stay on the side of caution.so here i am, im thinking gimbel bearing solid or something similar

many thanks
Damien

well i drained the oil from the outdrive and their is no sign of any lumps of metal, only good dark oil and a little filings on the magnetic nut. im going to refill tomorrow and if the noise is still their my next port of call will be the gimbel bearing, i hope to god thats the problem as the engine coupling sounds like a nightmare of a job. ive no problem pulling the leg of as i replaced the cable myself last season, their did not seem to be any play at the prop and when in forward or reverse the prop was connecting correctly, also yesterday on the way in the prop was not loose or not ingauging properly so hopefully the coupling is doing its job and the noise was from the shaft stuck to the gimble bearing and spinning around

DID THE BOAT OVERHEAT? No rubber in the bilge little black pieces?

Ok if it is the gimbel bearing the drive got to be pulled.

Actually the whole job ain't that bad.

Pull drive, pull motor replace coupler.

Gimbel went drive got to come off.

Soooo drive got to come off.

Don't waste the oil to refill your drive. your just going to have to drain it again. You got to pull your drive off and atleast look into the transom and spin the gimbal bearing, and shine a light into the coupler and see what it looks like.

when the post maintains i should pull the motor i assume they mean removing the engine, surely this is a rather large task to do and i would expect rather expensive. on a responce to a previous post their was no overheating issues

Sorry the truth hurts sometimes.

this is a day's work and all you need is a few tools and a hoist and a tree, in my case i used 2 trees with a 2x10. It's still there lashed to the trees, in my backyard i hang deer on it when i skin 'em.

So you oull the drive, make sure it's in forward. The remove everything that will stop the motor from coming up, and all you need is the motor up, leave the bell housing in place.

Soon as the motor clears the floor leave it hang remove the coupler and put the new one in place and drop down the motor. If it's the coupler.

If it's the bearing then the motor doesn't have to be pulled.

well im just in from pulling the alpha one leg off my searay and im happy to report the gimpal bearing was the cause of all the strange noises, it is completely siezed solid on to the drive shaft and as i was prizing the leg apart the compleste bearing came out with the shaft so no need for shaft pulling tool here. the smell i reported last week must have been the old greese burning as the bearing was resisting movement. anyhow im going to cut the old bearing off tomorrow and replace with a nice shiney new one.

Happy Days
