"Two new engines with hurst tr

"Two new engines with hurst transmissions. My owners manual says to replace the oil after the first 25 hours, I've gone way past that (75 hrs.) hope I haven't done any damage. Where is the drain plug for these transmissions ?

This is really simple. There is a round 2 1/2" diameter plate on top of the starboard side of the housing with an allen head bolt in the middle of it. Loosen the bolt, do not remove it completely, and pop out the plate. It may try to fight you a bit as there is an "O" ring on it. Once this is out you will see a removable round filter. It is a fine wire mesh screen filter, lift it out. Simply flush it in a parts washer or spray it good with parts cleaner.

Get a hand powered oil change pump, put that in the dipstick hole and pump out the oil. You can't pump it out from the filter area as that does not go all the way to the bottom of the housing. You should get 3 1/2 qts. out. Then simply refill it with Dextron. Be sure you run the engine to allow the system to warm and the cooler to refill prior to rechecking the level.

Manual says it holds 4 qts., are you saying the hand pump is not capable of sucking it all out?

Here's where it gets confusing, my Crusader manual says just that, but the Hurth manual that came with the boat specifically states "check the level while it is cold". Go figure.

The difference is due to the cooler lines and cooler. The exact amount of oil is determined by the location and size of the cooler. The larger and farther away it is, the more the system holds. Add the 3 1/2 qts, run it, recheck level and add as needed."

Found an actual ZF Hurth maintenance and service manual on the boat this a.m., hidden behind my crusader manual.

First it says (diagram also) that the old fluid should be sucked out with a pump through the plate housing where the filter is, says to loosen the allen screw lift the filter out (replace it with a new one)and pump the fluid out through there, not the dip stick tube. Also, it says to fill it through the same opening then put the new filter back.

I checked the fluid level (cold) and it is right at the min. line on the dip stick. Manual says it should be between the lines. Approximately how much dexron would it take to bring it up to full, are we looking at an ounce or two, or several ounces ?

BTW, it sure would help if I were 5 ft. shorter and 200lbs. lighter, they don't make it easy.

"That is certainly OK as long as you recheck the level with the dipstick when through. I have found it easier to use the dipstick hole to pump out, but that may be due to the type of pump I use. There is no need to replace the filter. It is a wire mesh type filter which can easily be cleaned as described above. I prefer to clean rather than replace because besides saving $30.00 per side, you will be able to see if there is any metal in the filter as you clean it.

It will take probably a half to one full pint to bring the level up to where it belongs."

I see that West Marine sells an oil pump for $26, looks like it should work. Does it matter that the tube is not a tight fit. Is it OK to just stick it down the opening as far as it will go?

"Yes, You won't find one that hooks on, just stick the tube down there and give her a couple pumps. Get one that will work with your engines as well, you will get lots of use out of it. There is a brass model that works real well."

No need, have an auto oil changer, I just flip a switch.

"If you oil changer is simply connected to the engine via the unused dipstick tube with a clamp, it would be easy to disconnect it, find a length of hose to slide inside it and dip that down into your trans housing.

Just to let you know... The original filters are marked at the factory and if they find the original filter in it your warranty will be void.
