Drain Carbs

Hello,

I am about to winterize my engine (Merc 90hp 3 carb).

I have mixed a tank of fuel with fuel stabiliser, but I understand there will be some fuel still in the carb bowls, lines etc etc. I want to remove the carb bowl bung, but I see in the manual the main jet is also with this bung. If I remove that, will it stuff up the jet settings????

I'd prefer just to let it run for a time on muffs to let the fuel run through the system. How long would it need to run to ensure the fuel system is flushed with the treated fuel??

Thanks,

Donald.

Piece of cake. Light her up, let it run 'til the motor is fully warmed up, then pull the fuel connector off. Push in the pin in the connector with your finger so the fuel pump can suck in the gas in the hoses. As the motor starts to sputter and die, hit the enrichener to keep it running long as possible. The amount of gas left in the bowls will be minimum, and the heat of the motor will soon evaporate it. Finally, put the cowling back on (if it's off) to keep the heat in.

Jeff

PS: If you're a fanatic, you could pull a hose at the carbs and blow out any gas in the hoses and fuel pump with some air.

My motor sat for 12 years since last being started, when I tried to start it, it fired right up. The previous owner ran the motor out of fuel as fastjeff suggests. I on the other hand ran the motor on the muffs last year and put stabilizer in it before storage without running it out of fuel. This year when I tried to start it, I had one carb with the needle stuck in the up (closed) position. Had I run the motor out of gas, this would never have happened! Lesson learned!

My float needles are the type with the rubber coating on the end, maybe they're more prone to sticking???

I wish I could convince my otherwise wise buddy of that! He insists on leaving gas in the carbs all winter. Yikes!

lol, I just fogged it at the weekend, so I don't want to start it until spring now really. Can I just take out the plug at the bottom of each bowl to drain the fuel?? I see the main jet is help in by that plug too??? Will removal stuff up the main jet settings?? Or is this not possible??

It is a fixed jet in the drain plug.----------No problem taking it out and draining the fuel.---------After you are done you will say ---------" why was I worried " !!
