"I've just dissassembled my DPSM outdrive and transom assembly and I'm pretty dissapointed with the corrosion in it and the degree of difficulty in dissassembling it considering it's only three years old and has only 150 hrs on it. I don't believe the electronic cathode system has ever worked on it from new as I've never seen any led's lit on it. It has power to it. What would you recommend assembling everything with. The guy that installed it say's he uses lanolin grease on everthing. The boat is on a trailer (never sits in the water for more than a weekend) and is thoroughly washed with fresh water and I flush with a corrosion inhibitor after every use.
Any advice welcome, Regards Peter."

"Peter,
Cathodic protection

"Peter,
Cathodic protection requires that the engine, transom housing and outdrive be properly bonded. Have you checked continuity of all of your bonding straps (corrosion), specifically the straps that bond the transom housing to the engine and the transom housing to the outdrive?

Use silicone grease when insta

Use silicone grease when installing bolts into aluminum. This material is a dielectric (electrical insulator) and will make it easier to remove the bolts later. Why was it necessary to "disassemble" a 3 year old stern drive?

"Peter, regarding Bobzilla&#39

"Peter, regarding Bobzilla's post, this is how my 280 transom shield parts are electrically bonded together.

"El Pescador/Bobzilla,
All the standard bonds/leads are in place. Denis, I probably should have said that the drive was removed rather than dissassembled to replace a dry/rusty gimbal bearing.I'm just at a bit of a loss when I read on this site about drives built in the 70's and 80's still in good condition. Mine is 3 years old and looking at the corrosion in it ,I'd be surprised if it lasts another 3. Admittedly it does all it's work in saltwater out on the Great Barrier Reef, but I'm fairly meticulous with washing and flushing etc."

"Peter,

"Peter,
It is very important to properly maintain the bond straps, especially at the fasteners and mating sites on the engine, transom shield, and outdrive and, by the same token, remember where they re-connect should you disconnect them for any reason. Kudos for El on that one! Cheers..
