DP-SM Prop Seal Replacement

FormulaGust

New member
Hi All,
I just replaced the prop seals in my DP-SM drive due to a leak. Unfortunately, I am unable to split the upper from the lower even though I removed the 4 nuts and 2 bolts and therefore I cannot set the rolling torque appropriately. Would it be possible to use the prop shaft to measure the rolling torque? What have others done?
thanks!

If your absolutely positive you have all the bolts out then the housings should be able to twist/turn
Other than that a severe prop strike could have jammed the splines.
But simply replacing prop seals should have no bearing on preloads

My primary experience is with the AQ series drives. I have limited knowledge regarding the later gimbal suspension V/Ps.
However, I believe that Ed is correct.

I am positive that all bolts (2) and nuts (4) are off. Unfortunately they 2 halves cannot swivel because of the studs from the upper that go into the lower. In order for the 2 to swivel, they upper and lower need to separate such that the studs clear the lower.
Also, the in order to change the prop seals on a DP-SM, you need to remove the carrier bearing. The nut that keeps the carrier bearing in also sets the preload.

That would be the "bearing housing" or "bearing carrier".

The nut that keeps the bearing carrier in also sets the preload.
As said, I have limited knowledge regarding the later gimbal suspension V/Ps, but I believe that the pre-load would be shim controlled.
(look at schematic 19624)

I still have a perfectly good (and available at a GREAT price) 260 drive in my shed that won't come apart. Apparently ( based on a small drip) a previous "mechanic" used a hard sealant on the mating surfaces of the housing when they reassembled the drive.

I see no shims in the carrier for preload, just O rings and retainer. So it looks like you just tighten the retainer
