I am new to this forum so, bear with me. I have a mechanic changing the engine in my boat due to a cracked block. It is an OMC 5.7 sterndrive. He is not a boat mechanic but an auto mechanic and he seem to think that changing the engine is as easy as pulling out the old and installing the new engine. I thought I read somewhere that you have to remove the sterndrive first then replace the engine and aliegn the engine and then replace the sterndrive. I'm just not sure he knows what he is doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ayuh,.... That's absolutely Correct...

Without doin' the alignment, you'll be replacin' the coupler in No time...

Thank you for your reply, so I'm going to need an alignment tool? Would a marina loan or rent one? I saw one online for $79 but than there is shipping, ouch. Is it a big job to remove the stern drive? Could you give an explanation how it is done? That would give me piece of mind. I think we can get this done between the mechanic and I, just getting to be more than I wanted to put into this old boat.

Ayuh,... Yes, ya NEED the tool,... Whether ya buy it, or borrow it is up to you, 'n whomever ya find that has 1...

It's a 10 minute or less job to pull the drive,...
Remove the 6 nuts, 'n the trim rams, then Pull...

It weighs 'bout 80lbs or so...

Sorry, it is a stringer drive. I just started looking at this stuff and am not familiar with the different drives . So, to install the new engine, do I have to do anything to the out drive? There is not much info on this stringer drive online, it is also called vertical drive, correct? I,m assuiming because it is driven by a ball gear shaft and not a drive shaft ??

it was called "The OMC Sterndrive", by OMC and alignment is not needed with that style of drive after an engine swap. Good catch, Bondo.

Putting the year and model of boat and drivetrain in your signature always a good idea dotroad.
