Donbt all outboards pee

I noticed my buddies Yamaha ru

I noticed my buddies Yamaha running yesterday but no water was coming out. When I asked him about this he said the motor had been rebuilt and the mechanic bypassed this and installed some sort of gauge. Is this possible???

"All modern water cooled outbo

"All modern water cooled outboards should have a "pee" indicator showing that there is water pressure in the cooling system. If my mechanic by-passed this feature,I'd want to know why and then I'd hook it back up. It's just a small rubber hose coming off the cylinder head and leading to a small outlet on the cowl. It's not really part of the cooling system, just an indicator. Every time you look back at your engine you can get some idea that your water pump and cooling cycle is working. Why anyone would want to eliminate this is beyond me. Of course a temperature guage in addition to this is fine."

Where does the coolant water c

Where does the coolant water come out then? Is is normal to have water dripping steadily from the forward seam of the cowling under the engine? I don't know if this the normal path for the coolant or not.

the cooling water comes out as

the cooling water comes out as a steady stream through a little tube mounted through the back and usually the starboard side of the cowling so that you will have an indication that water is circulating through your cooling system.

"I must confess that I rarely,

"I must confess that I rarely, if ever, look just to see that there is water coming out of the pee hole. I "might" notice if it wasn't, but it would be more likely that I wouldn't notice until the alarm went off (or worse). On the other hand, if I had a temperature guage, I would look at it often. Still - I can see no reason to disconnect the pisser."

I'd also be more likely to

I'd also be more likely to notice if it wasn't peeing than if it was. Sometimes if I'm trimmed way up for very shallow water or weeds or going through muddy water I do like to glance back and see that water flowing just to be sure my water intake isn't plugged up. The addition of a temperature guage plus the pisser should give you some great insurance againt overheating. Better hook that thing back up. It's just a piece of black rubber tubing. Good Luck!

"As a boater for over 30 years

"As a boater for over 30 years with inboards, I/O's and outboards the first thing I look for when the engine starts on both an outboard (the pee hole) and inboard (exhaust port) is the water flow. No reason to leave the dock if the water is not flowing because you won't get far."

"down here in fla a lot of boa

"down here in fla a lot of boaters opt for a water pressure guage on there dash then the old caveman pee tube that almost no one ever looks at until its too late, a guage on the dash is much more easy to look at then turning your head and trying to look at your motor for the (tell tail), thats what it is really called, down here we run on the flats alot and run thru mud and shells that would normally clog up the pee tube but are digested and spit out the water pump normaly, its an easy mod to do all you have to do is unscrew the the fitting on the bottom side of the motor, and screw in a water pressure sending unit in the hole and run the wires up to the dash to the guage, with it in place you know what water pressure your motor is really running and not guessing if you have good psi or not, when you see a drop in pressure you know its time for an impeller"

"so If you change the impeller

"so If you change the impeller b/c there is no flow from the tell tail and there is still no water coming out with the new one in place, what else can it be?"

"If you have replaced the impe

"If you have replaced the impeller and still no pee then the pee hole is bunged up. Poke some wire in it and try to free up the blockage. It can still be pumping water. Run the engine with muffs to make sure water is pumping - coming out of the prop etc. And guage or no guage, I would always check the pee hole."
