Does this sound like a starter solenoid?

Recently bought a 1972 Correct Craft Martinique with the Chrysler 318. Went to start the boat yesterday and the starter motor spins when the key is turned, but the motor does not turn over. I'm guessing the solenoid on the starter has failed? Going to look into it today, but thought I'd post here to get some input. Thanks!

Sounds like a bad starter bendix, not the solenoid.

I second Jeff on the motion...for what it's worth.

A new starter will run you about $300 clams !!! Find a shop around town that can rebuild it, may be your best option. You may even be able to buy a rebuild kit that will be less than $40...

Seems like a short term solution....I would hate to get stuck out on the water with a bad starter.

I suggest that if you send yours out for repair, tell them you want the same one back and not a replacement. Also, don't know about your application but if it's a counter rotating engine, make sure the rebuilder understands that.
