"I have a noise after I put my boat in gear, it sounds like a squeak or a low squeal almost like a slipping belt. I know it's not either of the 2 belts on my engine. It is very obvious between a little above idle (800) and (1500) RPMs after that the exhaust noise makes it harder to hear. I believe it may even go away at higher RPMs. I ran her at WOT tonight and she seems to go fine. I hear it when I'm pulling away from the dock but I didn't hear it when I returned but I have heard it several times over the last few days always when I'm leaving. I am figuring that the noise is either the cutlass bearing or something in the transmission. The transmission is full to the mark and I changed the fluid about 3 weeks ago. Is there any way to test it with the boat in the water or does it have to come out. If it is the cutlass bearing do I have some time or should I do it asap?"

"Does it do it in reverse?

PS: I had a bad cutlass bearing that did the same thing. Was caused by getting a crab pot line wrapped around the shaft, cutting off water flow and cooking the bearing. It worked okay other than the squeaking. Solution was anew bearing."

"Thanks Jeff,

It's hard to tell because in reverse the transmission is a lot louder then when it's in forward. I did a little research last night because I was afraid that it would sieze up but it doesn't appear that it can happen seeing how it is constructed although destroying my drive shaft is not what I want to do either. I'm checking with the local yard to see what they will charge. My trailer has an issue so I can't pull the boat right now. Thanks for you help."

Good idea to pull the baot and at least take a look. My shaft was okay even though it made that racket for several months.
