Does this look like too much oil?

oil1.jpgThis is the oil level on my 4.3 Mercruiser. The engine is cold and the boat is level on the trailer. Should it really be well over the mark when resting. Was told by the Marine chap that serviced it that it was because of the oil filter draining back into the sump when engine is not on.
Could too much oil result in loss of power, loss of oil pressure and knocking noise as it has done after 2 hours use from the service. Below is a link to the You Tube video showing the moment it gave way whilst wakeboarding. It happens around the 1min 45 sec mark.

Any advice would be great

The chap that serviced it says hes now drained it back to the right amount and took only 250ml out. Looks like it would of been more than that.

It sounds like you have water in the motor. Water in the motor can be due to many reasons....hard to say exactly because the motor cover was in place.

Change the oil and see if water is present....

If water in the oil then more detail is needed as to what was recently done to the motor such as, was it winterized properly or not? was the motor over heated?

Pull the spark plugs and see if water comes out of the spark plug locations. If so you may have a blown head gasket.

Thanks for the advice, it has only just been repaired from taking on about 4 inches of sea water from the exhaust. The engine did sit in about 4 inches of water for a day resulting in broken starter motor, trim pump and solanoids. It then had new exhaust, belts, service, spark plugs etc. Just wondering whether this was the issue more so than too much oil.

A half liter of too much oil should not cause your issue.

too much oil can cause excess foaming of the oil but I am not sure a 1/2 liter would do this...

Have you restarted the motor since the oil level was reduced?

If so did it start and run OK? Maybe there was more than 1/2 liter of oil over the amount specified???
