does the right oil filter make a difference

I picked up a new Sierra oil filter in the city, it's a bit bigger than the Merc one on the motor
same diameter but longer.

the cross reference numbers match up.
Seems odd it's a bigger size
any comments?

Since nobody has responded I'll give you my 2 cents. I'm not a fan of Sierra products because of their reputation w/some items...not going to chew the issue other than they are cheap imitations of the real thing. The numbers cross match so it should fit as-long-as there is room for it due to the increased length.

I agree. Sierra is a knockoff product and I wouldn't recommend their stuff. Stick to the Mercury filter. That's the best filter for your engine.
