Does the motor need the thermostat and temp sensor?

I pulled the heads on my 1976 Johnson 70 hp and the thermostat and temp sensor look terrible!

Does the motor need these parts working to run?

I am tossing up about bothering to try and fix this motor and am considering a 2nd hand powerhead from a wrecker .... would that come with those parts? What exactly would come attached to a "used powerhead"?

Makes it easier if you keep your motor and problems in one thread, easier to follow, but YES, it needs the thermostat!!
Used PH? Might be the same as the one you have!
