Hi ! I have a '92 50 hp Johnson 2 stroke. Works just fine. Came with controls all connected. Have made a few short outings. No problem. Question: what is the simplest way to find out if it charges battery ? If it does, then will it use the same wire that it uses to start, because there is no other wire . I know how to use a voltmeter. The service manual I downloaded seems very complicated to a newbie like me. I'm 75 but no experience with bigger motors. Thanks for your time.

Yes it left the factory with a battery charging system.----Measure voltage on battery.-----Start motor and run at fast idle.----Should show about 13.4 / 14 volts.

I have a tendancy to complicate things. This is easy to do and I have done it before on my Jeep. Stay safe ! Merci merci merci !

Started instantly even after winter. But NOT charging. Is there a rectifier that might be bad ? Should I purchase repair manual ? This is a big baby to haul to repair shop.

The rectifier has yellow wires going in and 1 red wire out that goes to starter solenoid battery post.----evinrudeparts.ca----will help you.

I read that many small accidents can damage a rectifier. I will use a Johnson rectifier test I found on You tube, and go from there. Now to find it, hahahaha. Ladder time. Luckily, it's still in front of the barn. Many thanks from chilly Québec !

It would use the same wire back to battery. Follow the positive battery lead all the way back to the starter solenoid. This thing is easy to spot: two large wires (positive) and two small wires connect to it (one large cable goes back to battery and the other goes to starter). There should be another much smaller wire connected to the same post that connects back to battery - this would be your charge wire that comes out of the rectifier that others have mentioned.
