does 2005 8.1 gxi-d support J1939

Hi folks, I've been trying, unsuccessfully so far, to try and determine if the engines in my 2005 Regal 3560 will support a J1939 connection. My ultimate goal is to convert the J1939 to NMEA 2000 and feed the info to a new plotter. However, I can't seem to find out if the engines will even "talk" J1939. Best I can tell is that Volvo started supporting J1939 around 2005 and then supporting NMEA 2k with the EVC engines about 2008. I would appreciate any help in answering or pointing me in the right direction. FYI, I've already sent a note to Volvo Penta with no response and checked with the local dealer (he had no idea what J1939 was). Engines are Volvo-Penta, Model 8.1 GXII-D, Thanks. John

Hi Im a new member here and just searched and found your post, Im looking to upgrade my dashboard from analogue to digital and my Steyr engines use J1939 can 2.0 protocol so I ask, Did you resolve your question?

Steyr do a digital display however its small and very expensive (£5k/ engine) and doesn’t really fit in with the look of the dash that I am wanting to achieve. So im wanting to capture the data and display it on my new (TBD) plotter/nav screen.
 
The older (up thru MEFI-4) ECU's typically don't come programmed to use the CANBus...the newer ECUs are. the transition window was ~ 2005-2008.

Most use a Fox Marine adapter to convert the older ECU traffic into CANBus for use with the newer display systems...
