Do I have a bad cylinder

I have a 1969 evinrude 25 hp stroke I just bought over the holidays. I just replaced the water pump and seals and replaced the gearcase oil. When I ran it I had alot of smoke and it sputtered when just idling, but when put in gear it seemed fine. Also, I noticed that the water coming out of the engine looked like it had blackish oil shean to it, like the oil had been thru some type of combustion process. When I shut it off the barrel had a black shean of oil on top of the water not a clean shean like if the gearcase had leaked. Compression on both cylinders when I checked them was 95 psi and that was when engine was completely cold and it was snowing outside. Could one of the cylinders be going. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you have even compression the motor is likely AOK.------------Oil on top of the water is very normal when running in a barrel.---That is the nature of a 2 stroke engine.
