As the title states, I’ve got a 6.2L black Scorpion. The boat I bought came a little disassembled. Bought a new long block and I’m trying to get the distributor installed. Since it was already out when I got the boat, I’m having a hell of a time figuring out where #1 on the cap is.

I have this distributor:

It really can be anywhere on the cap. Can pick a post stab it in at tdc and turn body to where the post you picked is.

Is the scorpion mpi? If so doesn’t it use the crab cap HVS distributor not the delco est pictured

I really couldn’t tell you for sure. That’s what came on mine and I’ve seen plenty of pictures of other peoples with the same distributor, But I have also seen the other style. Not sure what determines that.

Here is a picture of mine when I got it. (Previous owner had already pulled all the wires off the plugs and just let them hanging)

remove #1 plug ,spin motor for compression. when you feel the air,tap slowly until the timing mark on the balancer lines up with the tab/notch.This is #1 TDC compression. Remove cap and see where the rotor is pointing, call this #1 ,then in a clockwise rotation 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2
facing the motor the right side ie 1,3,5,7 and the left side is 2,4,6,8

Pretty certain the OEM ECU drives the 'distributor needed' (which is really driven by the need for the CMP input)...a serial number can tell you what was originally there...

As mako said you can look up on the parts section by serial. Sorry for the confusion I did see in scorpion inboard parts section on this site they do show an EST distributor. I mistakenly thought all MPI used the HVS crab cap dist which has to be indexed in as the ECU uses a crank trigger. You dont need any of that just follow what BT mentions

as for indexing the flat cap where they show in the manual is #1 plug. There is a error in the manual . One pic shows you indexing on the number 6 in the plastic base while at the same time with the rotor at 3:00 position. Having a brain fart i was indexing at the number six and could not get the motor to start.Never set the rotor at 3:00 By removing the rotor I found the point in the dist, installed dist with the rotor facing 3:00 and motor started right up
