Distributor Gear Position M360

"When one of my '76 360's was rebuilt awhile back, the mechanic went belly up and left my engine in pieces. He trashed (bent shaft) on one of the distributors and lost the distributor drive gear. I purchased a mallory replacement distributor and a new drive gear. From a previous post, it is obvious that the alignment of the spline on the drive gear is critical. Since I never got to see its previous alignment, I don't know how to re-install it getting the twist of the gear correct. Anyone offer any suggestions?"

"The position of the drive gea

"The position of the drive gear determines where that 'tang' on the bottom of the distributor aims, so it has to be right.

No biggee. Rotate the motor to TDC for cylinder number one (front left) and start experimenting. When the rotor points in the right place in hte cap you're either spot on or off 180 degrees.

It's like setting in the distributor in any other engine except that, when that drive gear is in the right spot, the distributor is far easier to locate.

One thing to check though is the tab on the bottom of the New Mallory Dist. I had a customer of mine mention that the Tab was not in the same location as the factory Chrysler Distributor. It's not a big deal though. Just like Jeff said set it at TDC and then drop in the gear to match the Mallory. It's not a big deal but it's good to know if you ever change the dist. again.
