"My 1988 4 Winns 4.3L OMC had a cracked block. I purchased a Jaster long block and completed the exchange. Set the timming and it purred like a kitten. 20 minutes on the @2200 rpm and the distributor gear was toast.
Put the old cam in the jasper, flushed the oil system, new oil filter, old speaker magnets on the oil pan, and replaced the distributor gear. Set the timming and it purred like a kitten. 20 minutes on the water @ 2000 rpm and the second distributor gear was toast.

Any ideas?"

the only way i could see it be

the only way i could see it being damaged like that is if the gear is not being completely seated. did you try using the old intake manifold? Just guessing but i would suspect the distributer shaft length is not correct.
