Distributor cap spark plug configuration

"I had firing issues with my A

"I had firing issues with my AQ 131 Volvo engine and replaced the distributor cap and now get a spark without question as i got a backfire out of the carb (like i have the wires on the cap wrong) Like an excited idiot, i rushed and pulled the wires off of the old cap and lost track of where they were supposed to be seated on the new cap.

I know the firing order for a 4 cyl should be 1-3-4-2 but was not sure if there is a diagram for the top of the cap or if I should reline the timing and then set the wires that way?

Please let this non mechanic know the easiest way to get this fixed."

"set the timing marks on top d

"set the timing marks on top dead. that will be 1, or 4. if you need to narrow it further, stick a finger in the plug hole."

"Ok. If i'm at the front o

"Ok. If i'm at the front of the motor where the timing belt is, the plug closes to that should be #1 correct?

lastly, once timing is at 0 (front shows 0, 10,20,30,40....markings and the wheel has a white groove on it to line it up), I should put the #1 plug wire on the cap hole that lines up just after the rotor correct?

Thx for the help."

"okay, I see a little more det

"okay, I see a little more detail is needed. remove all spark plugs EXCEPT #1. yes it is at the front. turn the engine over till it gets dificult(this is compression)then to T.D.C. rotor will now be pointing at #1 wire location. 1,3,4,2 in clockwise direction. good luck."

Thanks I thought the #1 was at

Thanks I thought the #1 was at front but wanted to make sure before it backfired or wouldnt start on me.
I'll try this tonight. thanks again

thanks to all who helped me ou

thanks to all who helped me out. I lined up the plugs in firing order and then put the timing at 6 degrees BTDC after it would not fire on 0 degrees TDC.

Boat turned over and we had it on the river for the first time this morning. Seemed to bog down a little when i throttled it but if i backed off it ran fine. Not sure what that is all about..lol.

"Two guesses: either the carb

"Two guesses: either the carb accelerator pump may need some attention, your you have a fuel system problem (clogged filter, stuck anti-syphon valve, or even bad fuel)."

Thanks El. I may chock it up t

Thanks El. I may chock it up to bad fuel as the fuel was left in the tank last year after being only driven 3 times all of last year. I may just run it out on the lake at a decent speed adn then filling her back up with fresh fuel.

I bought this at the end of the season last year and dont know if he treated the fuel either.
