G'day
I just recently bought this boat a 2002 Stingray 190LS 4.3 MPI and Im slowly fixing things up one by one.

I have searched the net and cannot find a picture of what a good cap and rotor should look like.
Its $150 for the pair and thats fine but if mines good, then theres other things I can attend to instead :)
Ive taken mine apart and there was just a little white fuzz on the cap contacts and this is what it looked like cleaned up. Id say these still look great compared to a car but have no idea what this looks like in good serviceable condition for a Mercruiser.

Do these look good to you guys?

Cap looks ok

I would replace the rotor........the bronze/copper end should be nice and sharp as it does erode over time..

Also the junction of the spring tab and the bronze/copper tends to oxidize and a weak connection can result.

Thanks very much.
The leads look good but is there any way test them?
They appear genuine Mercury.

Also there is a connector on the distributor to the (from the diagram) the camshaft position sensor on the left of the pic.
Nothing is connected to it.Is that normal?

The leads (spark plug wires) I am not sure what the spec is.

Older ignition wires were ~ 5000 Ohms for foot typical.

Yes it's normal for your engine "year" model not to utilize the camshaft sensor....It'll be mounted in place but no harness connector to plug in. Roughly 2005/06 Merc started using the cam sensor.

Lots of good photos of the cap on ebay for you to look at. http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_from...1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=898253T23&_sacat=0

Thanks guys.

I meant the inside of the cap so I could see what the new contacts look like.
Havent been able to find a single pic of the insides.

Geeezzz, that cap is over $100 here in Oz :-(

Cheers

^^^ Hard to say for sure as they used different material for different applications (Marine vs Truck). Some materials works better in harsh marine environment than others. But yes that cap would fit and work.

If you open some of the different caps for sale and look around at the other photos, there are some really good photos of inside the cap too.

Ok, thats interesting.
The one you posted looks to have brass posts and brass inserts for the screw holes.
Mine is (looks like) aluminium and no inserts.
That leaves me wondering if mine is the correct one?

It is the manufacturer that dictates the post material used.

Some use brass/copper and they are the higher end manufacturers

the rest use aluminum.............

Just like any replacement part you get what you pay for.

Even GM may be aluminum but some higher end parts supply stores may carry higher quality.

When I used to run cars with point ignitions Accel was the brand to buy.
All there dist caps were copper terminals.
Napa's Belden line was also very high quality.......

Well think of it this way, If the US was the size of Australia we wouldn't have many choices either.
Also the OEM companies are all from here........

You would be surprised at what is available here..........almost anything you could imagine....and then some.
