i have a 1974 merc 650 3 cylin

i have a 1974 merc 650 3 cylinder and theres a strong burnt smell in my distributor and it won't spark and i have a guy that said he would give me a distributor from a 1974 merc 850 but its a 4 cylinder he said they look like they're the same size would i beable to put my cap (if it fits) on the one for the 85 hp and make it work to feed 3 cylinders or would it cause more problems in the long run?
 
Correct. You can you do it by

Correct. You can you do it by removing the 4 banger distributor shaft and replacing it with your 3 cylinder item. DO not try to pry the rotor off for it's bonded on!

PS: The optical sensor in your distributor is fried.
 
I have a 69 merc 1250 inline w

I have a 69 merc 1250 inline w/a thunderbolt ignition. My problem is that I only get spark when the key is just turned and released. Has anyone ever had this problem? If so what is the solution to solve. Thank you.

ok i replaced the distributor

ok i replaced the distributor and coil on my 1974 merc 650 and still no spark coming from the coil when the old distributor burned up could it have fried something else?
