dipstick indexing

Hello. I need some help from fellow boaters. So, I repaired the oil pan drain / dipstick fitting which failed. The problem is when I took off the dipstick I did not mark where the clip was located on the dipstick and I need to figure out the correct positioning to accurately measure oil levels. Would someone measure from the top of the dipstick to the top of the clip (where it fastens to the head) and let me know what that measurement is. I have a Crusader 454 XL. Thank you.

I can only THINK, the better method is to determine the exact volume of oil your engnine uses, make the oil change and then measure the mark a few times after it is all settled. This insures that under your angle of attachment, drainback and any other freakin' involvements, that your oil level is as the manufacturer requires it based on oil quantity and not some close measurement

The retaining clip's position should not have ANY effect on the 'level' indicated on the dipstick. As long as the dipstick seats fully into it's tube, the indicated level should be fine (assuming you got the correct tube-dipstick assembly).

Like Knuckle indicated, there are many specific-to-your-hull issues; the good news is there's a fair amount of tolerance in how much oil is needed to reach "full".

To clarify, after the oil pan dipstick fitting failed (see attached), I did not feel comfortable replacing with another so I used a barbed fitting and rated hose connected to the bottom of the dipstick.
