"I am well aware that most marine/auto parts should not be interchanged, but is there any reason to use marine spark plugs over autmotive spark plugs? I don't know of much of a difference between the two. Thanks for your input..."

"Spark plugs ARE NOT one of the items that are different for safety reasons. Spark plugs that are designated "marine" are made with steel that is a corrosion resistant alloy. Otherwise they are the same as their automotive counterparts. In any case, a good thing to do is always use anti-sieze on the threads of the plugs when installing them.

Among the items that must be "marine" items by law and for your safety are: starters, alternators, fuel pumps, rubber fuel line, carbuerators, backfire flame arrestor in place of air cleaning filter."

"The spark plugs are slightly different. The length of the electrode is different. I'm not talking about the gap, just the actual length of the spark plug electrode. One is longer then the other. Check it out."

"Graham, are you sure that you

"Graham, are you sure that you are not comparing a hot (heat range) spark plug to a cold plug? Are you comparing 2 different brands of plug?"

"Graham. technically the plugs

"Graham. technically the plugs are NOT different. However same engine in marine version might use a different plug than in auto version. This has to do mainly with heat range and operating conditions as well as power rating of the engine. Marine engines are normally higher power rated than corresponding auto engines. Some plugs are offered in SST, which I do not recommend anyone to put into an alu head.
As a curiosity: The local Am Car club back in Norway changed plugs to RV15YC , "marine application", with a much better fuel economy and starting ability than the recommended one. There are no laws without exceptions."

"No I'm not comparing heat

"No I'm not comparing heat range, or two different kinds of plugs lol. I was wondering if I was going to get some flack for posting that. If i can I find my tech note on this I will definitely post it. I learned this right out of service school, it is definitely a fact."

How to increase prices without changing product:Add 'MARINE' to the name!

ya that is what i was thinking

ya that is what i was thinking
but iridium plugs are way different
may be that is what he is talking about

"Ayuh,......

Just to narrow this arguement, to defined parameters,...

The SBC is the most common motor ever used in Boats,+ Automobiles,...
Up til 1996, the SBC used the R43T for automobiles,+ the MR43T for the Boats.....

The Only Difference between those 2 part #s is the "M", which means the plug body is made of an Alloyed steel,+ the other is just plain ole Steel.....

The Working end of these plugs is Exactly the Same,..... Period.....

You can run the R43T in a boat, but the chances of Rusted in solid plugs is much greater,.....

But there's No difference other than that....."

Then which would be the best s

Then which would be the best spark plug to put into a 5.0 (ford) OMC?

"Bondo pretty much explaned it

"Bondo pretty much explaned it. If you are concerned about corrosion, get the "marine" MR43T because of the corrosion resistant steel. Otherwise use the automotive R43T. With any engine it is a good idea to use anti-sieze on the threads of the plugs when installing them."
