" My tach quit working. I found a broken wire and repaired it. The tach now shows idle at 250 rpm's when motor is actually turning 650 rpm's. At higher speeds, the same situation. When the motor is actually turning 4000 rpm's, the tach is only showing about 1600. Do I have a bad tach? I checked the wires again and couldn't find another broken wire. Motor is 1984 Johnson GT 150. Help!! "

"Check the back of the tach to see if the dial is set on number 6 as it should be. If it is, the most likely scenario is that the tach is faulty. Unfortunately the only way to find out is to plug another one in.
