According to my owners manual

According to my owners manual "crusader 385 hp 8.1 liter captains choice" the proper coolant for the freshwater cooling system is DEXCOOL. I have done a google search for this product and see it has many law suits filed against it. Wat do I use instead of it ??

I don't think there is a problem with dexcool. I've been using it for 11 years in my vehicles (changed out periodically). It's also in my 2007 Crusader 8.1l engine. If you see a change in color in the coolant it needs to be flushed and replaced with the same. I would also add some of the GM coolant pellets that help seal any small leaks in the gaskets. they are availabe at all GM dealers.

Where can Dexcool be purchased

Where can Dexcool be purchased. I need a very small amount to top off my fresh water cooling system.

"Any auto parts store will have it. It is more commonly known as "Extended Life" anti-freeze and is marketed by many different manufacturers. Just note if you are getting pre-diluted, which is used straight out of the bottle, or straight blend which gets diluted with water prior to use."

"Hi Rick,
I was hoping you'd jump in. Not really sure if I should add some to my engines or not. All summer long the level indicated full on the clear plastic degas bottle. Now with much colder weather there is no fluid in the bottle. Should I fill it to the full mark with Dexcool or water, or just leave it as is ?

Thanks, richie"

"Sorry, I've been on the road quite a bit over the past weeks and haven't had time to contribute. (It's winter boat show season)

Check the coolant level in the reservoir with the engine warm to see how full it gets. Cooler temps will cause a lower level in the reservoir, but topping it off too much will simply cause it to overflow when warm. Since the bottle is empty when cold I would add 50/50 mix of coolant, at least enough to see it in the bottle, then check it when warm."

"Ran the engines this afternoon, against my slip neighbors advice, and the coolant level indicated full. I always thought engine fluid levels were always suppose to be checked while the engine was cold.

"That is true, but in the recreational boating world, cold is 60-70 degrees. At 30-40 degrees you will get an artificially low level reading since everything is colder than its intended cold temperature.
(You know...shrinkage)"

Does anybody have an informed

Does anybody have an informed opinion on using FPPF 4000 in Dexcool coolant to replenish chemicals (which it does) rather than changing out current antifeeze in engines?
